2024/07/02
On Environment Day, Rivas-Vaciamadrid celebrates its substantial achievements in recycling and waste management, highlighting its candidacy for the European Green Leaf Award 2025. In 2023, the city made significant progress in recycling, removing 6,617 tons of materials such as glass, paper, cardboard and organics from their selective containers.
For example, 1,361 tons of glass were recycled, saving 272 tons of CO2 emissions, and 2,397 tons of paper and cardboard, which prevented the felling of 28,764 trees. Used oil, with 50,900 liters collected, prevented the pollution of 50.9 million of liters of water, and the collection of 483 tons of organic waste was transformed into 120 tons of compost, improving the fertility of the local soil. In addition, the collection of 2,326 tons of packaging saved 1,163 tons of oil. In addition to its continuous effort in recycling, Rivas has launched innovative projects to reinforce its candidacy for Green City, such as the production of ecological asphalt from household waste, the installation massive solar panels in municipal buildings and community and domestic composting projects. Rivas also stands out for its management of special waste with a wide network of collection points.
